K-12 Behavioral Threat and Management Content Expert
Dr. Brian Van Brunt is dedicated to helping at-risk youth, starting his career as a child and family therapist focused on trauma, mental health, and disruptive behavior in schools. With experience as a case manager, EMT, and youth guide, he’s supported vulnerable individuals across various roles. An author of several books on threat and mental health assessment, Brian created the Pathways triage and Darkfox risk assessment systems, widely used to manage school safety. At Consortium Training & Consulting, he trains K-12 staff in proactive safety and intervention strategies, promoting safer learning environments.
Biography
Dr. Brian Van Brunt began his career as a child and family therapist working in the K-12 system with clients who struggled with traumatic experiences, disruptive behavior in the classroom, mental illness, and suicide. Brian held a Children’s Case Manager position for the State of Massachusetts Department of Mental Health where he assisted in special education, manifest determinations, development of Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs), and coordinating care with state agencies handling youth who had committed crimes, experienced abuse and neglect, and were living in residential or locked inpatient settings.
He spent time as an EMT-B (wilderness), adventure bound guide with youth, a ski patrol member, and coordinated the Children in Need of Services (ChINS) groups connected to the Lynn, MA probation department. Brian is the author of over a dozen books on disruptive behavior, threat assessment and mental illness assessment and treatment. He currently trains around the country with schools, colleges, workplaces, and law enforcement agencies.
At CTC, Brian develops trainings and offers consulting services to K-12 certified staff, teachers, and administrators, including prevention programs such as bystander empowerment and intervention. He is the author of the Pathways triage system and the Darkfox violence risk assessment system, used by K-12 schools around the country to assess threat and suicide risk and develop violence risk mitigation plans.
